Unfortunately, I am unable to join you today.
For those viewers who are about to watch Treasure Ship: Latitudes of Lust (Shikido Shiju Hatte: Takarabune), I would like to note three things.

First, this film is about a Japanese folklore. The treasure ship is a ship aboard by the Seven Lucky Gods, and it is said that when you sleep with a picture of the treasure ship on new year’s day, you will have sweet dreams. Of the Seven Lucky Gods, six are male gods, while one is a female goddess named Benten.
In this film, Benten carries an important meaning.

Secondly, I would like to explain about the subtitle which appears at the beginning of this film; “Made to commemorate 50 years of pink filmmaiking”
The term "Pink Film" refers to the fifty year old industry of low-budget Japanese adult cinema.
Today in Japan, there are many directors, screenwriters, and actors and actresses who come from a background of pink films.
The pink film director I would like to introduce today is Mamoru Watanabe.
Watanabe was born in 1931, and has directed over 200 films since his debut in 1965 with the film Hussy (Abazure). Watanabe was renown for being the “master of Pink Films.” Watanabe himself said “I have continued making films as a Pink Film ‘artisan.’ I love the word ‘artisan.’”
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pink Films, there is no one more appropriate than Watanabe.
However, during the preparation of the film, Watanabe was found to have cancer, and he passed away in December 2013.
Before his death, Watanabe said “I cannot direct anymore, but I want the film to be finished. Ikawa, who wrote the script, can be the director.”
Honoring Watanabe’s wishes, I directed the film.

Thirdly, I would like to discuss the lyrics of the song at the end of the film. The lyrics, Saino Kawara Jizo Wasan is about dead children at the riverfront separating life and death, crying as they remember their parents.
The Japanese audience laughed out loud when they heard this song, because a song that is 300 years old was being used in a modern way.
This humor was something I intentionally aimed at, and this is the thinking behind it.
Death is very tragic. But for those dying, like Mamoru Watanabe, I would like them to reach heaven in smiles.
I hope that this film will fill you with laughter and joy, and that someday Mamoru Watanabe's films will be available here in the Netherlands.
